Athletes don't simply work out. They train with purpose. That difference is at the heart of D1 Athletraining.
There is a difference between completing a workout and training like an athlete.
Athletes don't simply show up and perform a random collection of exercises.
They train with intention.
They build strength with barbells and racks. They sprint, jump and change direction. They develop power. They condition. They work on mobility and recovery. They receive coaching, measure progress and build upon what they have done before.
That is the foundation of Athletraining, D1's approach to training, developing and testing athletes. To get a closer look at how Athletraining is coached inside a D1 facility, explore the Athletraining Series on D1’s social media channels. Each video breaks down a part of the methodology our coaches use with athletes every day.
Inside a Division 1 collegiate strength and conditioning program, athletes rarely train just one physical quality.
Great strength and conditioning programs develop multiple physical qualities together, including strength, speed, power, conditioning, mobility and durability.
This comprehensive approach is often described as hybrid training.
Clif Marshall, D1's Senior Director of Coaching and Pro Training, offers a simple definition:
“Hybrid training is developing multiple physical qualities at the same time without sacrificing the primary goal.”
Depending on the athlete and the goal, that can include:
The specific emphasis changes depending on the person.
The principles do not.
Strength has been a cornerstone of athlete development for decades.
Division 1 collegiate programs have long used progressive strength training alongside speed, power, conditioning and mobility work to develop more complete athletes.
D1 was built on those same principles.
Strength helps athletes produce force, improve performance and better prepare their bodies for the demands placed on them.
And increasingly, everyday adults are discovering the same thing athletes have known for years: getting stronger changes what your body is capable of doing.
A recent survey of more than 1,700 D1 members showed how strongly strength resonates with D1 athletes. Strength was the primary factor influencing adult member retention and ranked as the top improvement reported by members.
The emphasis was just as clear among younger athletes.
79% of youth athletes said getting stronger and faster is what they like most about training at D1, while 66% identified strength as the area in which they have improved the most since joining D1.
Among adults, strength and weight room training ranked as members' favorite part of a D1 workout.
D1 athletes love getting stronger.
But Athletraining isn't strength training alone.
It is about using strength alongside the other physical qualities an athlete needs to reach a specific goal.
D1's 5-Star Workout puts those principles into action.
Each 54-minute, coach-led workout moves athletes through five intentional phases:
Each phase serves a purpose.
More importantly, each workout fits within a structured training cycle designed to help athletes progress over time.
For an NFL Combine athlete, the primary goal may be maximizing speed, agility, explosive power, maximal strength and position-specific movement.
For an adult, the goal may be losing weight, rebuilding strength, improving energy or simply becoming more capable in everyday life.
The program changes based on the athlete.
The principles remain.
Athletraining isn't defined by one exercise, one piece of equipment or one style of workout.
It is defined by intentionality.
Why are we doing this exercise?
What physical quality are we developing?
How does today's workout connect to yesterday's training?
How will we know whether the athlete is improving?
Those are training questions, not workout questions.
That's the difference.
Athletes don't just work out.
Athletes train.
And at D1, that's Athletraining.
